Hardboard Furniture

One very versatile synthetic paneling material is hardboard. Usually quite flat on one side and screened on the reverse, hardboard is made of wood chips that have been separated into personel fibers then bonded under heat and pressure into sheets of dense wood fiber. For added moisture resistance and strength, some hardboard is tempered with thermal-setting materials baked into place.

Hardboard comes in dark brow, gray, or blond; plain, striated, or perforated. Thicknesses range from 1/10 to 5/16-inch. The thinner types are extremely flexible, and the thicker types can be bent by manufacture a few saw cuts on the reverse side of the bend.

Saws Air Tools

Hardboard's density makes it one of the most dent-resistant of all the panel products - exquisite for flat areas that must take wear. The flat end is ideal for painting, and will not check or split in weather. Because the fibers are not aligned, the board has force in all directions.

Problems with hardboard contain its inability to hold nails or screws securely; the fact that it expands and contracts with changes in moisture (presenting problems with joints); and its sometimes cold, hard appearance.

In addition to quarterly hardboard and the two types listed below, you can buy numerous types, such as striated or combed-finish hardboard; plastic-coated types simulating tile, marble, wood grain, and leather; corrugated hardboard; pre-stained hardboard; and painted hardboard.

Perforated hardboard is one of the most popular varieties. It is very good for sliding cabinet doors and stereo-cabinet backs, as it allows air to circulate; or, it can be used for a "hang-up" storehouse wall (a wide collection of specially-sized hooks and supports that fit into the perforations are available at hardware stores).

Wood particle or "flake boards" are made from particles of wood rather than from refined wood fibers. Chips give a speckled appearance, in dissimilarity to the flat look of lowly hardboard. They are made in thicknesses varying from ¼-inch paneling material up to ¾-inch boards for more structural uses. Particle boards are made from a number of different wood species including redwood, maple, cedar, pine, fir, and a combination of pine and fir.

You can work hardboard with lowly shop tools. When hand sawing, use an 8 to 12 teeth-per-inch handsaw and cut at a fairly flat angle. When cutting with a power saw, use a low-set carbide-tipped combination or crosscut blade - adjusted so that only two or three teeth show straight through hardboard while cutting. Always cut hardboard with the flat face up.

Edges can be worked with a shallow-set, sharp plane; a file or rasp (worked lengthwise); or sandpaper. If sanding causes edges to "fuzz-up," operate them with a wash coat of shellac before final dressing. Panel surfaces should not be sanded.

Most hardboard can be painted, enameled, stained, waxed, varnished, or lacquered. Unless the material you buy is specially treated and requires no prime coat, Always use a good sealer or primer for both interior and covering work.

Before you paint hardboard, apply one coat of a pigmented or clear resin or penetrating sealer. For a natural finish, you can apply a clear sealer before the wax, lacquer, or varnish end in order to cut darkening of the wood.

When working with particle of flake boards, you may want to use a wood paste filler to insure a flat end for such items as table and desk tops. Result the manufacturer's directions in applying the filler, then sand for a perfectly flat surface. For natural or stained finishes, use transparent paste filler. Don't use steel wool on untreated particle-finish panels. The fine threads may catch on the personel wood fibers or chips exposed on the surface.

Solar power Myth Exposed - Diy Solar Panels Do Save You Money, and Very quickly

We have had a amount of emails recently saying that there are just too may issues in making your own solar panels. Problems like high levels of handyman skill required, solar panel operation limitations, etc.

Here's an example. We'll call him John. John has been a handyman for years. Only puny projects but none the less prominent to him. He'd built book shelves and some storehouse cupboards for his garage. He had a few of the usual tools - some electrically driven like drills, skill saw, etc and plenty of hand tools he'd collected over the years. When he went to his local hardware store to start on his Diy solar panel task they said he was mad.

Saws Air Tools

Building solar panels was very difficult and they'd heard the panel operation was very poor with very low voltages. He was confused, implicated and nearly gave up. That's when he emailed me after doing some Internet research.

We have said for a long time you only need two things to ensure your Diy solar panel task is a success. You need some basic handyman skills and a few tools, and you need to want to save on your electricity bills. Oh, and it helps if you have a desire to want to assist the Planet.

When John emailed us we asked him in some information about the projects he had undertaken, he was for real quite concerned. He'd done a lot of explore and he believed he had the handyman capability to build a panel or two.

He already knew from our solar panel newsletters that the basic process of building a solar panel involved:

• Laying out a sheet of plywood and aligning the photovoltaic cells on it neatly.

• Drill holes in the plywood and associate each cell with copper wire so that all the cells are connected. Place a glass sheet in front of the cells and an extra sheet of plywood behind the copper wiring.

• A frame is put around the sheets of glass and plywood to hold the whole thing together. This is sealed to protect the cells from rain, hail, snow, wind, dust particles etc.

He already knew where to buy photovoltaic cells for his panel from the explore he had done on the Internet.

His concern for real boiled down to "could he build a solar panel which would perform the vital voltage and current?" We said to him, if you have followed the instructions and videos we recommended you will be able to perform a satisfactory ensue when you measure your panel's circuit voltage and current. If there is a problem, the instructions will assist you but frankly, it is very rare for real for a panel not to perform the target voltage and current. We are here to help if you do have a problem.

Just remember each panel will cost you -200 - that's all! correlate that to commercially available panels. Your payback duration will be a matter of weeks, not years.

Remember, there is only one source of power that is available and it emits an anticipated amount of solar energy. This is available Free! You just need to harness it to save on your electricity bills. L we have to do is harness it to reap the rewards.

Picture yourself walking through you r home and not being implicated at the air conditioner being on. It probably not unreasonable to say that free electricity could be a life changing experience.

And, remember this can be a fun task that you are for real going to enjoy. It is not a myth. There are hundreds and perhaps thousands of happy Diyers out there with their own home build solar panels.

Since my departure from the former "Corporate Life" almost 8 months ago at the young age of 42, I have been on a free-bird journey to "find my bliss". In that time and my travels, I have continually been confronted with and struck by the fact that, although there is much talk about and studying of "the power of intentions", it appears to me as though many citizen aren't yet legitimately "living it". "It" being their own life, dreams or reality in happiness and in well being.

The lights of their proverbial stage remain unlit and the seats of their theaters empty.

William Shakespeare so eloquently stated in his masterful and deliberate creation "As You Like it",

"All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts,"

In my reality, everybody is a player on my stage and a mirror for my self-learning pleasure, my theatre is sold out consistently!

It was only a few short years ago - in the middle of 4 and 5 - that I was introduced to an old and great limited book. At the time, I carefully the author an odd seeing man with an even odder name - Wallace D. Wattles. The title of the book is "The Science of Getting Rich" and "Wally" - as we have affectionately come to call him - was inspired to share his "pragmatical and practical manual" almost a century ago in the year 1910. Unlike other books I had read prior to it; "The Magic of reasoning Big" by David Schwartz, "Acres of Diamonds" by Russell H. Conwell, or the all-time superior "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill, this book in case, granted me with a new perspective and new tools to experiment with. I was hooked on both the preface and the first paragraph of the first chapter as Wattles stated,

"The monistic ideas of the universe the ideas that One is All, and that All is One; That one Substance manifests itself as the seeming many elements of the material world..." ~ Preface

"Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a legitimately faultless or prosperous life unless one is rich. No man can rise to his many possible height in talent or soul amelioration unless he has fullness of money; for to unfold the soul and to organize talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with." ~ chapter 1

It seemed to me that "everything old was new again". The words came at me from a long ago past in crisp clarity, and clarity I have come to experience, is the essence of power.

Wally and my "playing with his principles" went on to prove to me, beyond a shadow of my own doubts, that there is much more to earning money than exchanging my time and talents for it, and that the former transfer is much more difficult than the "much more" that was required to amass personal wealth and well being. It was also the first time I had realized that there legitimately are no coincidences in my world, and that all that seemed like a coincidence was there on purpose and deliberately for my own growth, use or entertainment.

The Science of Getting Rich, as with many others, summarizes and continually re-iterates a mantra that I felt true in every cell of my Being. Wattles speaks of "The certain Way", a certain way of being, doing and reasoning that sounded loudly well-known and gave me the well-known goosebumps of recognition that I was "onto something". It spoke to me of the possible knowing of my own integrity and excellence that has been my particular relax in times of uncertainty and indecision all my life.

"There is a reasoning stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its former state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.

A thought, in this substance, Produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.

Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his belief upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.

In order to do this, man must pass from the competing to the creative mind; he must form a clear reasoning photo of the things he wants, and do, with faith and purpose, all that can be done each day, doing each isolate thing in an efficient manner."

Simply taking the above statements "on faith" and going through my days in "The certain Way" opened up a whole new set of options for "deliberately creating" the future that I desired to experience. As my days unfolded with new evidence that I was legitimately affecting the events nearby me, I was struck with a realization and deeper understanding of an even older story that has all the time had me in a childlike state of awe and wonder.

That story is the story of our own creation as told in the book of Genesis - "The Beginning". It was upon this realization and after many years of having first read it that I finally "felt" I understood how it was possible to create a whole universe single-handedly!

The words in verses 26 & 27 (Niv) was now a huge "aha"!

"Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."

It now made total sense to me that if God created us in his/our image that we should have the ability to create as [he/they] did!

Since that time, I have been blessed with the appearance and teachings of many mentors, coaches and masters that confirm my own gargantuan "aha". As I said at the starting of this article:

"I have continually been confronted with and struck by the fact that, although there is much talk about and studying of "the power of intentions", it appears to me as though many citizen aren't yet legitimately "living it"."

Like a scientist with a whiff of profound discovery, I began to ask myself some new questions:

What if we do have the ability to create as God did? How has that affected what and where I am now?

What if we are all here as a singular entity and at the same time still related to and operating out of that "formless stuff"? Which brings me to another verse from Genesis - Verse 2:

"Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."

And, blasphemous though it may sound to many, even to myself the first time I asked it, the most foremost demand of all -

What if I Am God?

As I asked the demand and tried to fantasize the "consequences" of that being true I felt a lightness and "certainty" envelope me. For the first time in my life I felt the true essence of "secure". It also caused me to realize that not everybody would feel the same sense of relax and security in that "truth".

It smacked of huge "responsibility". If everybody is God and creating their own reality, some may not be too "proud" about what they have created for themselves so far. Taking accountability for the present circumstances of their world might be painful at best. I have somehow inherently operated from these "new" rules all my life, using this "force" on purpose has allowed me to see how I "create" and I am "at peace with where I'm at". Is it not easier for many to shift the accountability to a greater entity or to someone else if things are not exactly as they want them?

It is truly humbling to look at a "mess" and take accountability for creating it, to say, "this I have done - and it is good".

Well, it is "all good". Can I refer to Genesis again? consideration that at the end of each verse, after each of his creations it says:

"And God saw that it was good."

There's a new teacher on the planet today. An entity that has come to us and interacts with us from the "formless stuff". I have enjoyed and delighted in the "Teachings of Abraham" for almost 3 years now. They/it are here to teach us to "feel good" no matter what, to ignore the apparent "reality" of our circumstances and go for that better feeling place. Abraham-Hicks is being hailed as the many teacher of our time, and comes at a time we need them most.

It is our "good" feelings that are the raw material in creating that which we desire in our lives. Knowing with clarity what we truly want is the tricky part, and the most important. What do you want when everything's possible? Like the art of praying and praising taught to me in Sunday school so many years ago, setting my intentions and remaining in a state of certainty and allowing has me in total bliss from moment to moment every day!

Here's a quote by one of my favorite human beings, Albert Einstein:

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of reasoning we used when we created them."

Keeping in mind that all is all the time good, and if you realize you have a qoute - which is just a "don't want", step out of your former way of reasoning and tap into something a limited different than you're used to. I promise you that at last it'll all come back nearby to that which you already know.

My demand to you is, do you even know what it feels like to feel good let alone contact total bliss?

Sounds like an certain demand and I've met many that don't - yet.

Like God did in the beginning, in his image we embark on our rockets of desire and go about creating that which pleases us most. Knowing we are in a place of faultless control at all times and having faith in the simplicity, of a universal law that is unfailing in it's "certainty" creates a huge sense of security - all is all the time excellent in its timing and it is all the time "good".

So ask yourself - regardless of your prior programming,

"What if I am God?"

How different would your world look in a few short days, weeks or months from Now?

And, no matter what you see then, plainly decide, "it's all good", because feeling good is all the time a choice.

Sliders, Steals and Saves - Organizing Lessons from the Boston Red Sox

I admit I am a sometime baseball fan. I only start watching toward the end of the season, and only if I think there's a opportunity the Boston Red Sox team will go to the World Series. But once I started watching when I saw the Red Sox were ahead, I was hooked.

Hooked, not just because to me, baseball is a beautiful game to watch. But because the more I watched, the more respect I had for what it takes to be a winning team. A few life lessons I learned from this singular team of World Series champions are:

Saws Air Tools

1. Each player is clear about the most leading things and plans time for them.

For each player and every owner on the Red Sox team I warrant the leading thing is winning the World Series. They show up at practices on time all season long. They do not allow other things in life to get in the way of their traditional focus: winning the game.

For the rest of us:

Be clear about the most leading things in your life.

Plan your time doing them. Note, plan your time. Planning your time is the key to how you will spend your time.

2. The players use self-care.

I'll all the time remember the photo on Tv of Kevin Youlilis, sitting in the cold air in the Colorado Coors Stadium in a heavy jacket with hood on, wearing huge padded red ski gloves. He did what he needed to do to make sure he was warm and ready to play, even though it must have been difficult to be sitting on the bench. When his time came to play, he was warmed up and ready.

For the rest of us:

Take utmost care of your body.

Sleep when you're tired. Take breaks. Get sufficient exercise.,Take utmost care of your body which has to carry you day in, day out, for the rest of your life.

3. The Red Sox Team believe in themselves.

Who would have plan this team would win the World Series twice in 4 years, after a hiatus of 86 years? Every player on the team must believe in their hearts and souls that they can do it. perhaps it was a tiny bit easier this year to believe, because they did it just a few years ago.

For the rest of us:

Believe you can do it!!

If you don't believe it in the innermost core of your body, heart and soul, you'll be defeated before you start. Do whatever it takes to believe: write down your vision, say an affirmation every day, out loud. Tell the world.

4. The Red Sox Go with their Strengths.

Even the best players all have weaknesses David Ortiz, the fantastic batter, has bad knees and is a slow runner. So, towards the end of game 4, Coach Terry Francona put in a pinch runner on first, who would be able to run much faster than David Ortiz. Each batting line-up is chosen with care for the strongest strategy of that game.

For the rest of us:

Do what you do well, and delegate the rest.

For instance, f you're not good at technology, get help. If you have trouble creating systems, hire an organizer or secretary.

5. The Red Sox focus on the gift Moment

I was amazed to peruse the zen-like focus of each pitcher, each batter, particularly during the last two games in the huge Colorado stadium, packed with fans rooting for the Rockies! The horns, crowds cheering or booing, white towels waving in the stands. Without that fantastic focus on each pitch, each swing, the Boston team might have fallen apart.

For the rest of us:

Don't get overwhelmed or distracted.

Remember to focus on the Now, and worry later about what comes next. Desist each task and put away the tools or papers before starting another task. Don't get distracted by other unfinished projects before you Desist the project you're working on now.

6. The team knows how to celebrate Victories

What could be more thrilling than pouring champagne on your team-mates after winning the World Series?

For the rest of us:

Celebrate even the smallest of wins.

I'm not advocating spraying champagne over your friends or office mates, but it's leading to answer your success. Many of my clients are reluctant to pat themselves on the back after a prosperous organizing session. They only see what's still ahead to be done. At the very least, be sure to say out loud, "good job (Suzie)"!! "I knew I could do it, and I can do it again". You'll feel motivated to move on to the next thing.

A 17-year-old Soldier in Germany

I turned 17 in my second eight weeks of basic training at Fort Hood, Texas and was too young to appreciate a tour of duty in Germany. I did visit some of the sites, but most of my free time was wasted. I should have taken more leave while there and toured more.

After the troop ship landed in Bremerhaven, Germany, we loaded into a train and headed south to a small town near Frankfort, Germany. Hanau would be my home for the next two years. The cold war was construction up and we were warned about riding the trains to close to the border. You could get on the wrong train headed for East Germany and it would not stop until the first hub inside East Germany. And then it would be too late and it might take months for the soldiery to get you back.

Saws Air Tools

Following small arms target convention one day about an hour drive from Hanau, two of us decided to skip the target duty and hitch hike back to the barracks. Large targets would be raised for the solder on the firing line to shoot at, then you would lower the target and mark the bullet holes. If they missed the target all together, they would get a "Maggie Drawers," a red flag would be waved from the pit for everybody to see. Sometimes if you didn't care for the person on the line, we would give him "Maggie Drawers." We walked out to the main road with our rifles over our shoulders and put out our thumbs. In no time we were back at the Barracks and no one said anything, I guess that we were not missed.

The Barracks at Hanau were built by the Germans before Wwii and the base was well laid out in a half circle with the motor pool and equipment on one side and the barracks on the other side. It was a short walk to the motor pool but it seemed longer when you were caring all your gear and a 30-Cal motor Gun or the barrel of a 50-Cal. We had Red Alerts about once a month and we would jump out of bed, rush down to the arms room in the basement, grab the equipment and run to the motor pool to await added orders. Our Barracks was on the projection with a good view of the athletic fields and lower buildings. The room was also on the top projection floor. It was great except for a low preserve beam that ran at an angle from the floor to the ceiling. We soon learned to duck under or avoid it.

We were trained for an Atomic War if hostilities broke out. One or more of the Atomic war heads for the Honest John Missile where stored in the basement of our barracks. We all the time new when they were involving them, because they would warn us about taking pictures out of the windows. I did take a few pictures of the crane that lifted the war heads but not of the warheads. Shells for the Atomic Cannon where moved nearby all over our area and could have very well been stored in the basement as well. One end of the basement was restricted and we had our classroom and arms room in the other end. There were rumors that we also had Atomic rounds for the 8 inch and 155 mm guns, but I never knew for sure.

B Battery, 3rd Armored agency 2nd Howitzer Battalion, 73rd Artillery, consisted of six 155mm M109 self-propelled howitzers and an armored personnel carrier for Fire Direction Control. Except for direct fire practice, the artillery would be shooting blind under the operate of the Fire Direction operate Center. The Fire Direction operate center would receive data by radio from the forward observer who would be watching the rounds hit the impact area. The pack of charges for firing the 155mm shells came in a pack of seven. They would then be told what fee to use, for example a fee five would mean that two charges would be removed and thrown into the fire pit. As a security measure, one of the gun crew would count the discarded charges and repeat out loud to avoid mistakes.

A recorder on the phone between the fire direction group and the guns, would report all the data sent to the guns, in case there was a mistake or person misunderstood, then verification could be made. This was my job, Battery Recorder. I would ride out ahead of the battery with the First Sargent and we would align the aiming circle, a expedient which had a compass and a scope for sighting in distinct angles. We would use this to accumulate the precise direction for the guns and place stakes for them to line up on when they pulled into position. Great care had to be taken to insure that all six guns were pointed in the same direction parallel to each other. You aligned the expedient to magnet north by looking through a hole at the end of the compass needle. The danger here was that you had to be sure that you knew which end of the needle you were looking at. If you had the wrong end, then the guns would be laid out 180 degrees and you would be shooting backwards. One of the Honest John rockets was laid out backward in Grafenwohr while practice. The rocket with just adequate explosive to blow the head apart, hit a construction in a nearby town. No one was hurt.

The Fire Direction operate center consisted of two drafting tables set up in the armored personnel carrier with field telephone feel with the guns. Each table was selfsame except that one used a plain paper chart and the other used a topographic map. The first order of firm when we set up in a new position was to zero in on a known target. We would fire one round toward the target and the observer would then give us corrections over the radio. We would bracket the target with normally only three rounds. From this data we could then aim at any other target within our field of fire. The drafting equipment consisted of a metal scale for the elevation and protractor for the azimuth. There were other calculations that carefully the permissible fee and weather reports that gave us the air density. This data was sent to the guns in a string of data as Charge, Elevation and azimuth. The recorder wrote down this data as it was being given to the guns.

After setting up the alignment stakes for the guns and while waiting for them to arrive, I would dig a fox hole and set up the command hub for our Lt. Who over saw the operation. In convention I could get away with digging a shallow hole and erect a tent or camouflage over it, depending on the weather. Two pictures of Lt. Weske and myself on the field telephone are in the 1959-1960 Spearhead year book for the 73rd Artillery, 3d Armored Division

My cousin, Anna Lell, started writing to a pen pal in Germany when she was in high school and asked if I would look her up while I was in Germany. We wrote some letters back and forth and I was invited up to Hanover when I got some leave. Hanover was in the British sector and they were not used to looking American solders. Annamarie's father was a solder in Wwii and I am not sure how he felt about his daughter looking me. A friend of theirs owned a Hotel and they provided me with a nice room. We went to the movies, took long walks and toured Hanover. Nothing more became of the relationship and we lost touch. I am not sure if Anna Lell is still writing to her.

I also corresponded with Becky, my friend from Englewood, Tennessee while I was in Germany. It was nice to get letters from home and others while away from home. Once shortly after I arrived in Germany I took a week of leave and went camping. I did not have much money so it seemed like a good idea. I fit right in with the campers and my pup tent. The locals at the camp ground were friendly and they had a nice swimming hole.

I was not much for drinking, I might go out on the town with some of the other solders and just sit on one drink all night. any way one evening I concept that I would see what it was like to get drunk. I persuaded Zink who did not drink, to go with me. Funny how we used only last names in the service and seldom first names. I guess it was because our last name was all the time there on the front for everybody to see. Zink took good care of me that night, I sure don't remember much and was very sick the next morning. I hated not knowing what was going on nearby me and I don't recall ever trying that again.

Operation Winter Shield took place in February 1960 with over 60,000 members of the Seventh Army at the Grafenwohr training grounds. The weather was cold and dry. This was the cause of a major motor pool fire at the start of the training. A returning jeep driver was refueling one night from a tanker parked in the motor pool, when a static spark started a gasoline fire. We were called out in the middle of the night to evacuate the motor pool. It was quite a sight with all the vehicles involving past the burning jeep and fuel tanker with the tires blowing and flames reaching hundreds of feet into the night sky.

One of the Batteries experienced a shell going off just after leaving the barrel of the gun. There was a road some 100 yards in front of the position and a Lt. In a jeep had a close call. We got the cease fire on the radio and listened to the excited chatter over the radio. The shell is set for an air burst by placing a tool on top of the shell and setting a dial for the precise time. There are security limits on the dial, so it had to be a defective shell in order for it to go off that soon.

We would go to Grafenwohr about every six months for training and that summer we returned.

Gen. Colin Powell writes in his 1995 autobiography "My American Journey" about his time with the agency in 1958-60 and about the Cold War and the Army's mission in Germany.

Colin Powell was assigned to the 3rd Armored agency on December 1958, the 21-year-old 2nd Lt. Joined the 2nd Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment, at Coleman Kaserne. After a promotion to 1st Lt. And training in Grafenwohr, he linked the following story. I was also in the field at Grafenwohr that fateful day. We were in the middle of a firing mission with our 155's when the radio broke open with a command to cease firing, hold all positions and enunciate radio silence.

While working as Louiseil's exec, I got a foretaste of what hot war could be like if the Cold War ever ignited. It was a morning after payday in the summer of 1960. Our brigade had gone to Grafenwohr for field training. The soldiery were to be billeted in over six hundred general-purpose tents. Our firm had not yet arrived in force, but a sister unit, the 12th Cavalry, had come in the night before. Its tents were full of troops, still asleep at this early hour. I was returning from a bartering mission with another company's exec., bringing rations I had traded for back to our mess hall. My ears pricked up at an odd, whistling sound overhead. In about a nanosecond, I realized it was an artillery shell that had strayed wildly out of the impact area. I stopped, frozen, and de facto saw the 8-inch round come in. It struck a tent pole in the 12th Cavalry's sector, detonating in an air-burst. The roar was deafening, followed by a dreadful silence. I dropped the food and rushed toward the blast as dismembered legs, hands, and arms thumped to the ground nearby me. Money from payday came fluttering to earth. Some other soldiers joined me, wading through the acrid smoke and fumes. Inside the tent, I zipped open a sleeping bag, and what was left looked like an illustration of viscera in a medical textbook. In an instant, a dozen lives had been snuffed out and more men wounded. The tragedy was later found to have been caused by human error in aligning the gun, and the battalion commander and other officers were relieved of their duties. I had seen a hundred war movies, but nothing had prepared me for the sights I saw that day.

(Account of the urgency from the History Web Site of the 3rd Armored Division)
Accidents in an actual shooting war, as well as a Cold War, are inevitable. This one, however, stands out as apparently the worst U.S. Ground training urgency of the whole Cold War. Just after roll-call, on a rainy Friday morning on September 2, 1960, sixteen solders were killed and 27 were wounded when a 200-pound artillery shell landed surrounded by them at Camp Kasserine, Grafenwoehr. All of the men were from the 3rd Reconnaissance Squadron, 12th Calvary, 3rd Armored Division. The shell, which had an incorrect fee due to human error, was fired by a V Corps Artillery unit -- Battery A, 3rd Battalion, 18th Field Artillery.

I knew exactly what happen that morning, person misunderstood the precise fee and the round over shot the impact area. The big fear in that tent area that morning was that they all knew that normally a fire for result would result and that would mean six more rounds could be following the deadly misplaced round.

I tried to take a typing procedure while my time in Germany, I started the procedure three times and each time when I was about half way through the procedure we would pull out for field training. I never did faultless the course. any way the typing lessons have helped me over the years.

I took a join of weeks leave and visited Copenhagen, Denmark. Saw a lot of museums and towers, one tower was built for a queen to ride up in a carriage had a circular ramp all the way to the top. I saw Tivoli Gardens and the Littlest Mermaid. I loved the food, they had a lot of dairy products and everybody was friendly. The bars rotated hours, at midnight half would close and another group would open. Copenhagen had a lot of night life and although I did not dance much, I enjoyed watching. I was a loaner, maybe because I was younger than the others. I took this trip and others by myself.

Near the end of 1960, the majority of our unit rotated back to the states for discharge, these were the drafted men who only had to serve two years. The enlisted who had to serve three years had to take over the operations for another six months. At the same time the Nike Missile sites in Germany were being turned over to the German Army. The men who still had the remainder of their tour to serve were transferred to units like ours who were now short of men.

I was promoted to Sp4 and placed in fee of the Fire Direction operate center under a new Second Lt. Phelps. Even though I had received developed training at Butzbach, Germany in January 1959 in Fire Direction, I had been acting only as the Battery Recorder up until this time. Now I had a new crew with no feel or training in the Artillery. I conducted classes, but it was hard to hold the interest of displaced men with only months left to serve. I was very cautious, remembering the accidents that had occurred I did not want any blood on my hands.

During the winter of 1960/61 we were complicated in more tests at Grafenwoehr and I am proud that we completed the exercises without incident. However, were slow in performing the test. I was given an report 15 and reduced back to hidden and 2nd Lt. Phelps did not get his 1st Lt. Bars. I fought the report with the help of barracks lawyers, until it was practically time for me to ship back to the states. One of the guys at headquarters told me at the end that if I had not fought so hard, he could have torn up the papers and no one would have been the wiser. But it was too late at that point so I stripped off all my rank from my uniforms, except one set that I saved for the trip home. This would keep me off any picky details that were dished out along the way.

We were fortunate to fly back to the states and I had a month off to visit family, now living in Florida, before reporting for duty at Fort Lewis, Washington. I was hoping to be stationed closer to my home, any way you are returned to the nearest post that you enlisted. As I enlisted in Portland, Oregon, then Fort Lewis would be where I would be discharged.
